Present Simple

We use the Present Simple Tense to talk describe things, to talk about facts, things we like or don&#;t like, things that happen regularly, to talk about present states and to give general opinions.

Present Simple &#; an introduction

Si usa il Present Simple per dire oggetto che è autentico in generale, o per parlare di situazioni o azioni ricorrenti. Anche in Italiano, in questi casi, si usa la forma basilare del presente (faccio, lavoro, mi piace, ecc). &#; The Present Simple Tense is used to describe things, to talk about facts, habits or things which happen regularly, to talk about present states and also to give general opinions.

  • My car is red (description)
  • My son is 14 years old (fact / state)
  • I work in a bank (fact / state)
  • Malta is very hot in the summer (fact / describing a noun)
  • The train station is in Via Marconi (fact)
  • Paolo speaks Italian, English and French (fact)
  • I am very thirsty. I need a drink! (state / fact)
  • &#;The green mile&#; is a very good book (opinion)

We can use the present simple to talk about our habits and how often we do something:

  • I go to the cinema every week.
  • I don&#;t eat pasta often.

    Present simple or present continuous?

    Some verbs are normally used in the present simple and not in the present continuous. Here are some of them:

    know, suppose, think, understand (mental process verbs)

    admire, adore, detest, hate, like, respect (verbs expressing feelings)

    smell, taste (verbs describing the senses)

    consist, contain, last (verbs describing permanent qualities)

    promise, swear (speech act verbs)

    You could ask Greg if he can help. He knows a bit about cars.

    Not: He’s knowing a bit about cars.

    Those batteries don’t last very long.

    Not: Those batteries aren’t lasting very long.

    Each chapter contains authentic reading texts and a variety of listening and speaking activities.

    I swear I gave you back the keys.

    Not: I’m swearing I gave you back the keys.

    We use be in the present continuous to talk about current actions or behaviour rather than about a quality or characteristic.

    Il present simple si usa:

    • Per esprimere abitudini, azioni generalmente valide, azioni ripetute o situazioni immutevoli, emozioni e desideri:
      I smoke (abitudine); I work in London (situazione immutevole); London is a large city (dichiarazione generalmente valida)
    • Per dare istruzioni o direzioni:
      You walk for two hundred meters, then you turn left.
    • Per esprimere un dovere prefissato, presente o futuro:
      Your exam starts at
    • Per esprimere il futuro, dopo alcune congiunzioni: after, when, before, as soon as, until:
      He'll give it to you when you come next Saturday.
